A thermal transfer printer is a non impact printer that uses heat to register an impression on paper by melt ink on to it. A ribbon is used that consist of three layers, first is the base material which helps keep ink from adhering to print head. Other two are heat melting ink and coating on print side of base. On other hand direct thermal printers do not use ribbons; it prints the image by burning dots on to coated paper.
